Nome comune: pungitopo (in passato veniva disposto intorno alle provviste per salvaguardarle dai topi)

Arbusto sempreverde, tipico della macchia mediterranea; presenta strutture che sembrano foglie, ma in realtà sono rametti modificati con funzione fotosintetica (cladodi). Un'altra particolarità è la presenza di fiori sulla pagina inferiore dei cladodi, da cui originano le tipiche bacche rosse.

Al ruscus vengono attribuite proprietà antinfiammatorie, diuretiche ed antireumatiche
